    Salary $28.81 -$35.94 hourly. Full Time

    Summary

    This position will remain open until filled with applications being reviewed as they are received.


    This position is hands on and specializes in all areas of turf design, installation, operations and maintenance.  Prospective applicants will have a strong background in a turf related field.  


    In addition, this position performs all park maintenance functions necessary to ensure clean, safe, high quality recreational facilities available for public use. Ability to perform and direct all work in a safe and efficient manner. Will be required to perform manual, semi-skilled and skilled labor in all the Divisions’ areas of responsibility and will direct seasonal staff.   The Park and Forestry Division mission critical high impact areas of responsibilities include but are not limited to: horticulture, turf, trails, forestry, athletic fields, ice rinks, courts, play equipment, parking lots, native areas, general park maintenance activities, and park building maintenance. The position would also be involved in providing assistance to other divisions and departments as needed such as ice and snow control.  This position, at times, will be required to work alternative schedules including evenings, early mornings, and weekends, as required for the city’s maintenance operations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:   

    Employee will plan, complete, and record maintenance using traditional methods, work with suppliers to purchase operation supplies, conduct field inspections, and provide other expertise as required in the maintenance and inspection of turf and irrigation as well as other mission critical areas.

    May direct seasonals in all areas of parks operations.

    Perform all work in a safe and effective manner.

    Daily work will be in the field, include manual labor, and may also include but is not limited to Mission Critical High Impact (MCHI) areas of work.

    Ability to coordinate contractual services in mission critical areas of Park maintenance. 

    Ensure both workspaces and equipment are maintained at a high level of cleanliness.

    Assist in all Mission Critical areas within the Parks Division

    Work with both full-time and seasonal employees in a professional manner.

    Perform other duties as assigned.            

    Perform manual, semi-skilled, and skilled labor associated with turf activities, but not limited to:

    • Design, installation, establishment, maintenance, repair, coordination, and direction of turf related projects associated with athletic fields, landscaped areas, native/natural areas, boulevards and city owned properties.
    • Rainbird IQ4 and Baseline moisture-based irrigation system installation, repair, operation, scheduling, and maintenance.              
    • Knowledge of turf/grass materials, care, identification, and maintenance.
    • Athletic field maintenance
    • Train, assign, direct, and evaluate seasonals on site specific duties.
    • Snow removal from and ice control of streets, trails, parking lots, sidewalks, and rinks. 
    • Repair and maintenance of tools and equipment.
    • Playground equipment inspection, maintenance and repair.
    • Park Building and picnic shelter repair and maintenance. 
    • Ice rink establishment and maintenance of winter ice.                
    • Assist other City departments/divisions in maintenance activities.
    • Other duties as directed or requested by the Parks Managers or Park and Forestry Division staff. 

     

    Operate with a high degree of proficiency the following hand power tools, small engine powered equipment and trucks in association with park maintenance and snow removal operations:

    • Hand power tools, small engine powered equipment, hand pruners, hand saws, string trimmers and brush cutters.
    • Self-propelled riding lawn mowers and large area turf mowers up to 16-foot width.             
    • Utility tractors and attachments.                                
    • Light duty trucks, 3/4 and one-ton trucks, with and without snowplows. 
    • Single axle dump trucks used in maintenance projects, snow removal and ice control operations.
    • Skid-steer loaders and other front-end loaders.
    • Utility trucksters with or without attachments.

    May occasionally operate the following heavy equipment or other equipment as directed by the Parks Supervisor:

    • Tracked excavator
    • Front-end loader with 2-yard or greater bucket capacity. 
    • Hydrostatic rollers.
    • Single-axle dump trucks.

    Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Two years of experience in a turf, athletic field, golf maintenance, or closely related field.
    • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive.
    • Class A commercial driver’s license including: combination, tanker, and air brakes endorsements or the ability to obtain within the first 12 months of employment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Three (3) years of experience in turf, athletic field, golf maintenance, or closely related field.
    • Associates degree in turf grass science or related degree.
    • Experience with large scale irrigation systems, which include central-based controller platforms.
    • Experience with 2-wire irrigation systems.
    • Minnesota A & E and pesticide applicators license.
